Baseball Season is here

April 5th is Opening Day which means spring has officially arrived and we can’t help but talk baseball.

Yesterday, over breakfast, husband was sharing a Facebook thread about the 1986 Mets vs. Red Sox game. Jess didn’t have much to say, but she was listening as he recalled the Buckner game. We then shared our favorite baseball moments. One of mine was of the Twins pitcher Joe Niekro . Phil and Joe Niekro were notorious Knuckle ball pitchers.  Phil with the Yankees and Joe with the Twins.  I happened to be watching the infamous “Emory” board game and can still recall all the Umpires around the mound when Joe reached into his back pocket and tossed the Emory Board onto the ground. I vividly recall Joe throwing his hands up in the air, declaring innocence as the camera zoomed in for a close-up of the Emory board in the grass.  Funny the things that stick.

Husband is a Mets fan.  I came from a Yankee family.  If I had known this before I said yes to the dress, I might have thought twice about marrying him, but at least he wasn’t a Sox fan.  All of our baseball conversations ultimately end when Thurman Munson gets mentioned. Munson died over 40 years ago and we still recall that moment as if it were yesterday.

Last night we went to The Headquarters for husband’s birthday. It’s our favorite Lebanese restaurant.  As we were driving, husband commented that we were each using our computers; he had his phone giving directions, I was texting family with our ETA and Jess was chatting away like she always does while in the car.  She was asking for ice cream and then said “ha ha ha”, knowing that wasn’t going to happen. As we neared Wendy’s, she asked to stop there and then said she “lots of sprinkles on anything”.  She was getting desperate. As we neared Burger King, she made her final ditch effort to sway us from our destination. I’m realizing that we need to give more eatery options on SFY.  Of course, she doesn’t just talk about food.  Jess comments about everything. If the conversation is moving too fast, she interjects a word for emphasis.

People often ask me what she is thinking. Honestly, I don’t know, but I do know that she is deep like an iceberg. Jess only shares a fraction of what is on her mind.  It was no surprise to me when she chose the movie Fever Pitch this afternoon. There is a scene where Jimmy Fallon has a break down after missing a big game and he watches the Buckner error over and over. Yes, Jess is listening. We are pleased that she enjoys baseball too.

Trenton Thunder is a Double-A, minor league affiliate of the Yankees and it is practically in our backyard.  This is where we go as a family.  We think Jess is ready to become a “Fan”.  Who knows, maybe Jess will find her favorite player.  We want to give Jess choices with everything, however, husband draws the line at the Phillies…. she probably shouldn’t wear Dad’s Met’s hat at a Thunder game either,  just saying…
